Before You Leave
Objective: Know exactly what to prepare, pack and book before boarding your flight.
Documents and essentials
- Passport (valid 6+ months)
- Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
- Visa sticker in passport
- Return flight or onward itinerary
- Proof of accommodation for first nights
- Copies of key documents (kept separately)
What actually happens
- 1Confirm your Status of Residence
Check the visa category printed on your COE and visa sticker — it defines what you can do in Japan.
- 2Book temporary accommodation
Reserve 2 to 4 weeks of housing so you have a clear address for your Residence Card and City Hall registration.
- 3Prepare document copies
Make 3 colour copies of your passport, COE, and visa. Store one set outside your luggage.
- 4Set aside arrival cash
Bring enough yen for taxis, SIM cards and initial meals — many small shops still prefer cash.
Say these when it matters
Airport immigration is faster if your COE, passport and disembarkation card are stacked in order before you reach the desk.
Do not enter on a tourist waiver if you already hold a COE — you must be admitted under the correct Status of Residence or your Residence Card will not be issued.
